1. Battery and charging fault (M1, Manchester)

A customer in M1 had a battery critically low warning: the charger worked for five minutes before the laptop shut down. They had measured the charger output at 12V DC and the battery connector at 10V.

Our approach: battery and charging issues can be complex, and we avoid rushing them unless it is a clear-cut battery replacement. Because the customer had already opened the laptop, there was a raised risk of a secondary short circuit, well-meaning DIY can unknowingly create further faults. Our next step was to ask for the full model number to check motherboard schematics; without it, we cannot tell whether parts are available or whether a repair is cost-effective.

It helps to understand the chain of components involved, because a charging fault can sit anywhere along it. Mains power enters through the charger (the brick), travels down the cable to the DC jack or USB-C port, passes through a charging circuit on the motherboard (charging IC, MOSFETs and sense resistors), and finally tops up the battery, which has its own small protection board. A fault in any one link produces similar symptoms, so a single reading rarely tells the whole story. The 12V the customer measured is a clue in itself: most laptop chargers output 19V or 20V (or negotiate higher voltages over USB-C Power Delivery), so a 12V reading could point to a failing charger, the wrong charger, or a board that is not requesting full voltage.

A laptop that runs for a few minutes then dies is a classic sign of a battery that can no longer hold charge under load, or a charging circuit that is not actually replenishing the cells, so the machine is simply draining what little is left. Things that can go wrong if this is rushed: forcing a swollen battery, cracking a board connector, or fitting a cheap aftermarket battery whose protection board fights the laptop and trips it off. What you can check yourself: try a known-good genuine charger, check the cable is not frayed near the plug, and look (gently) for any swelling that lifts the trackpad or stops the laptop sitting flat. A swollen battery should be treated as urgent and the laptop should not be charged or used until it is replaced. 2. Screen not displaying (M23, Manchester)

A request from M23 said everything on their Acer Predator Helios 300 worked except the screen.

Our approach: as the rest of the laptop worked, we assumed they had confirmed it on an external monitor via HDMI. If an external display works, the fault is likely the LCD cable or the screen itself. On some Acer models the backlight can fail, which you can spot by shining a torch at the screen, if a faint image appears, it is a backlight issue rather than a dead panel. The complication is that on some Acer models the backlight is driven by an IC on the motherboard. We quoted for a screen or LCD cable replacement, flagging that if the backlight had failed on the board itself, that is not something we repair, and we would advise on the best route rather than take the job on.

The external monitor test is the single most useful thing you can do here, so it is worth explaining why. The image you see is built by the graphics chip, sent through a cable to the panel, and lit by a backlight. Plugging in an external screen splits the problem cleanly in two: if the external picture is perfect, the graphics chip and the rest of the machine are fine, and the fault lives in the lid (panel, cable or backlight). If the external screen is also blank or garbled, the problem is more likely the graphics hardware on the board, which is a very different (and usually pricier) job. The torch test narrows it further. A dead panel shows nothing at all; a backlight fault shows a faint, ghostly image that becomes visible when you angle a torch across the screen, because the picture is still being produced, it just is not being lit. Hinge cables are another common culprit on laptops a few years old: opening and closing the lid thousands of times can fatigue the thin ribbon cable, causing flicker, lines or a screen that cuts out at certain angles. 3. Very slow laptop (M40, Manchester)

A business customer reported their Asus laptop was extremely slow, taking ages to log in.

Our approach: without the full model number it was hard to check exact specifications, but experience points firmly to an ageing hard drive. If a laptop once ran fine and has gradually slowed, a failing or slow mechanical drive is the usual culprit. The reason a mechanical hard drive (HDD) feels so painful in 2026 is physical. An HDD reads data from a spinning platter using a moving arm, so every file request waits for the platter to rotate and the head to seek. A solid state drive (SSD) has no moving parts and reads from flash memory electronically, which is why swapping one in can cut a two minute login down to a few seconds. As Wikipedia's overview of the solid-state drive explains, SSDs offer dramatically lower access times and higher throughput than spinning disks, and that gap is exactly what you feel at the login screen.

A slow login is not always the drive, though, and a good diagnosis rules things in and out rather than guessing. Other common causes we check are too little RAM (the machine spends its time shuffling data to and from the slow drive), too many startup programmes loading at once, a drive that is almost completely full, pending Windows updates churning in the background, and occasionally malware. What you can check yourself: open Task Manager (Ctrl, Shift and Escape) and watch the Disk column at login; if it sits pinned at 100 percent for minutes, the drive is the bottleneck. 4. MacBook keyboard fault (M40, Manchester)

A customer reported keys falling off their MacBook (A1502).

Our approach: on these MacBooks, replacing individual keys is not generally an option, the keyboard is spot-welded into the top chassis. A proper repair means replacing the entire top chassis with a refurbished genuine Apple part, and because the battery is glued to that chassis, it needs replacing too, since removing it without damage is very difficult. The model identifier is doing a lot of work here, and it is a good example of why we ask for it. An A1502 is a Retina MacBook Pro with the older scissor-switch keyboard built into the top case. Later models used the much-discussed butterfly mechanism, which was prone to sticking or repeating keys from dust ingress, and different generations again moved to the current Magic Keyboard. Each one is repaired differently, and the part numbers do not cross over, so a guess at the model can mean ordering the wrong chassis entirely. What you can check yourself: before assuming the worst, it is worth gently cleaning around sticky keys, as crumbs and dust are a frequent cause of unresponsive or repeating keys. 5. Gaming laptop running hot (M4, Manchester)

A ROG Strix G16 owner was worried about high CPU and GPU temperatures despite using a cooling pad.

Our approach: we reviewed their temperature screenshots and everything looked normal, many modern CPUs and GPUs are designed to run hotter than older models. We advised against repasting just yet, as the laptop was only a few months old and likely still under warranty. Instead we suggested checking the air vents are not blocked and elevating the laptop for better airflow. If still concerned, we could replace the thermal paste, but warned that opening it might void the warranty. Sometimes the honest answer is that nothing is wrong.

This case is worth dwelling on because overheating worry is one of the most common things people bring us, and most of the time the laptop is behaving exactly as designed. Modern high-performance chips are built to run close to their thermal limit on purpose: they boost their clock speed until they reach a set temperature, then hold there. Brief peaks into the high 80s or low 90s under heavy gaming are normal for many gaming laptops. The number that actually matters is whether the chip is throttling, that is, dropping its clock speed below the base figure to stay cool, which is a protective mechanism rather than a fault in itself. The chip's design power, often quoted as TDP, sets how much heat the cooling system is built to handle; Wikipedia's explanation of thermal design power covers why these figures vary so much between models and even between two laptops with the same chip.

If a laptop that used to run cool now overheats, the two usual causes are dust clogging the fins and thermal paste that has dried out over three to five years of use. But on a brand new machine that is simply running warm under load, the honest advice is to leave it alone and keep the warranty intact.

6. Smashed laptop screen (M13, Manchester)

A customer with an Asus X1605E asked for a screen replacement after a drop.

Our approach: because they described the screen as smashed, we were alert to additional damage. If an impact lands on the back, the LCD cover can also be damaged, and on thin OLED displays even minor chassis damage can cause misalignment. To avoid surprise costs, we asked for photos before quoting. Photos save everyone money on screen jobs because the fault description and the actual damage often differ. A spider-web crack with a working backlight is a clean panel swap. Black ink-like blotches or spreading colour pools mean the liquid crystal layer is leaking and the panel is finished. Flickering or lines with no visible crack can be the cable rather than the glass. And a drop that bent the lid can leave the new panel sitting unevenly, which stresses it and shortens its life, so on a bent chassis we will say so rather than fit a fresh screen into a frame that will damage it. Getting the exact model right matters here too, because resolution, refresh rate, touch layer and connector type all vary, and an X1605E panel is not interchangeable with a similar-looking model from a different range.

7. Laptop completely dead, no lights, no fan

One of the most common jobs that comes in across Manchester is the laptop that simply will not switch on: press the power button and nothing happens, no lights, no fan, no beep. It feels dramatic, but it is often one of the more diagnosable faults because the symptoms are so binary. We work down the power chain in order, from the cheapest and most likely cause to the most involved.

How we approach it: first the charger and the wall, because a dead brick or a tripped socket mimics a dead laptop perfectly. Then the DC jack or USB-C port, which can wear, crack or lose its solder joint after years of plugging and unplugging; a tell-tale sign is a laptop that only charges when the cable is held at a particular angle. Then we look at the battery and, importantly, we try a power drain, also called a hard reset: with the charger removed, hold the power button for about 30 seconds to discharge residual power, then reconnect and try again. This clears a surprising number of no-power laptops where the power management has simply latched up. What you can try yourself: a different known-good charger, a 30 second power drain, and a careful look and listen for any LED flicker or fan twitch when you press power. Any sign of life, even for a second, is a useful clue. If there is genuinely nothing at all, the fault is more likely on the motherboard's power circuitry (the voltage regulators or power controller), and that is a board-level diagnosis rather than a parts swap. 8. Liquid spill: the clock is ticking

Spilled tea, coffee, water or wine on a laptop is one of the few faults where what you do in the first few minutes genuinely changes the outcome. The danger is not always the initial splash; it is the corrosion that sets in afterwards, because sugary and acidic drinks leave conductive, corrosive residue that keeps eating at the circuit board long after the surface looks dry.

What to do immediately: turn the laptop off straight away (hold the power button if you must), unplug the charger, and if the battery is removable, take it out. Turn the machine upside down like an open tent to let liquid drain away from the board rather than pool on it, and resist the urge to power it on to check it still works, as that is exactly when a short circuit does its damage. What not to do: do not use a hairdryer (it pushes moisture deeper and can melt parts), and do not rely on a bag of rice, which does nothing for corrosion already forming and leaves dust and starch behind. The genuinely useful step is to get it to a repairer quickly. How we approach it: we open the laptop, disconnect the battery, and inspect the board under magnification for corrosion and residue, then clean affected areas, often with isopropyl alcohol and, where needed, an ultrasonic clean, before testing each power rail. Liquid damage is unpredictable: sometimes a clean and a new keyboard is all it needs, and sometimes a corroded component has already failed. 9. Clicking, stalling or SMART-warning drives

Separate from the everyday slow laptop, we regularly see drives that are actively failing rather than just old. The signs are different and more urgent: a clicking or grinding noise from a mechanical drive, files or folders that vanish and reappear, the machine freezing for long stretches, or a startup message warning of an impending drive failure. That last one comes from a built-in monitoring system called SMART, short for Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology, which tracks things like reallocated sectors and read errors and warns you before the drive dies completely.

How we approach it: the order of operations matters enormously here. If a drive is showing SMART warnings or clicking, the priority is to image the data off it before doing anything else, because every extra hour of use can be the hour it fails for good. Only once data is safe do we move on to fitting a healthy replacement (almost always an SSD) and restoring the system. SSDs fail differently from hard drives, with no warning noise, so for them the SMART data and sudden read-only behaviour are the clues. What you can check yourself: if you hear clicking or see a SMART warning, stop using the machine for non-essential tasks and make sure your important files are backed up to another drive or the cloud immediately. A drive that throws a SMART error cannot be reliably repaired; the honest move is to replace it and recover what you can. This is the case where a current backup is worth more than any repair, which is why we keep coming back to it.

10. Random freezes and crashes: when it is the RAM

A PC or laptop that freezes at random, throws blue screens with memory-related error codes, or crashes more under heavy multitasking can be pointing at faulty or insufficient memory. RAM faults are sneaky because they are intermittent: the machine might run fine for hours then lock up, which makes them frustrating to pin down without proper testing.

How we approach it: we separate two different questions. First, is the existing RAM faulty? For that we run a dedicated memory test (such as MemTest86) that boots outside Windows and hammers the memory for several passes; a single error is enough to condemn a module. We also reseat the modules, because a stick that has crept loose in its slot, common after the laptop has been carried around or knocked, produces exactly these symptoms and costs nothing to fix. Second, is there simply not enough RAM? A machine with 4GB trying to run modern Windows, a browser with twenty tabs and an office suite will crawl and stutter not because anything is broken, but because it has run out of headroom and is constantly swapping data to the much slower drive. 11. Pop-ups, redirects and a sluggish PC: suspected malware

Not every slow or misbehaving computer is a hardware problem. A machine that suddenly fills with pop-up adverts, redirects your browser to sites you did not ask for, changes your homepage or search engine on its own, or grinds to a halt with mysterious processes running is showing the classic signs of malware or a browser hijacker.

How we approach it: we first confirm it really is malware and not, say, a failing drive producing similar slowness, because the fix is completely different. Then we clean the machine properly: scanning with reputable tools, removing unwanted programmes and browser extensions, resetting hijacked browser settings, and checking what is set to launch at startup. Crucially, we also look at how it got in, because a cleaned machine with the same risky habits will simply be reinfected. What you can do yourself: keep Windows and your browser fully updated, be wary of pop-ups telling you that you are infected (those are frequently the scam itself), and never ring a phone number that appears in a browser warning. How we diagnose: the standard process

Whatever the symptom, the underlying method is the same, and it is deliberately unglamorous. Good diagnosis is about ruling things out in a sensible order, cheapest and most likely first, rather than swapping expensive parts and hoping.

  • Reproduce the fault. We try to see the problem happen, because an intermittent fault described over the phone and the same fault witnessed on the bench often turn out to be different things.
  • Split the problem in two. The external monitor test, a different charger, a known-good drive: each of these cleanly divides the machine into a working half and a suspect half, which saves time and money.
  • Check the cheap and common causes first. Dust, a loose RAM stick, a tired charger, a full or failing drive. These account for a large share of faults and cost little to rule out.
  • Protect the data before touching the hardware. If there is any sign of a failing drive, the data comes off first.

What you can safely try first

Plenty of faults have a safe, no-risk first step you can do at home before booking anything in. None of these involve opening the laptop, and none will make things worse. Working through them often tells us (and you) a great deal.

  • No power: try a different known-good charger, then do a 30 second power drain with the charger unplugged and the power button held down.
  • Blank screen, machine running: plug in an external monitor to see whether the picture appears there.
  • Suspected dead panel: shine a torch at the screen in a dark room; a faint image means the backlight, not the panel.
  • Slow machine: open Task Manager and watch the Disk and Memory columns to see which one is pinned at 100 percent.
  • Running hot: check the vents are not blocked by dust, a bed or a sofa, and raise the back of the laptop for airflow.
  • Liquid spill: power off, unplug, turn upside down, and do not switch it on to test it.
  • Anything important on the drive: back it up now, before you do anything else.

If a step points clearly at a part you are comfortable replacing, fair enough. If it points at the motherboard, a soldered component or a glued-in battery, that is the moment to stop, because those are the jobs where DIY most often turns a cheap repair into an expensive one.

Why the model number matters so much

If there is one request that runs through almost every case above, it is the full model number, and it is not bureaucracy. The exact model tells us the screen's resolution, refresh rate and connector, whether the keyboard is replaceable or welded in, which charger voltage and connector it expects, whether the RAM is upgradeable or soldered, and which battery and motherboard schematics apply. Two laptops that look identical on the shelf can take completely different parts inside.

The number we need is the specific model or part identifier, not just the brand and a rough description. On a Windows laptop it is usually on a label on the underside, and on a MacBook it is the Axxxx identifier (like the A1502 above) plus the model year.
